Co-op crew find time to help carers

Staff at The Co-operative food store in Adeyfield hit the right note with young adult carers today as they helped launched a year of fundraising The Carers Trust, the grocery group’s new charity of the year.

The charity will benefit from The Co-operative’s staff, members and customers raising much needed money to tackle feelings of isolation and provide desperately needed breaks, information, advice and support for 14-25 year-olds facing the challenges of caring.

Money raised in Hemel Hempstead will benefit young people locally.

To mark the launch, staff tuned into a ‘rock around the clock’ theme to acknowledge the often 24/7 nature of the challenges facing an estimated 500,000 young people in the UK who care for a family member or friend who are ill, frail, disabled or, have mental health or addiction problems.

Store manager Muhammed Chowdhury said: “The challenge of unpaid caring is often a hidden issue even though it can affect most families at some time. We’re delighted to have the chance to make a difference to young people in our communities who have practical and emotional caring responsibilities for a family member or friend who cannot cope without their support.”
