Dive in to offer support for swim pool sessions

A selection of the opportunities available this week through the Dacorum Volunteer Centre.

Woodfield School in Leverstock Green urgently needs volunteers to help keep their vital swimming and therapy sessions going.

Woodfield works with children from three to 19 with severe learning difficulties, some of whom are also seriously physically disabled.

Regular sessions in the warm hydrotherapy pool help the children exercise and are great fun.

For some children who are wheelchair users, a session in the pool gives them the independence and freedom of movement they wouldn’t be able to have otherwise.

Volunteers don’t need to be swimmers but should be able to support a child in the pool.

You would be working as part of a supportive team alongside a class teacher and other volunteers.

Woodfield offers new volunteers an informal visit to the school before inviting them to apply for their chosen role.

> Woodfield also needs library volunteers to hear children read and help keep books tidy and in good repair.

You will be working alongside a team of staff and times are flexible to suit both sides.

> A new school governor is needed by Belswains Primary School. This is an opportunity to help shape the future of the next generation.

Governors are responsible for the smooth running of the school and can become involved in setting policies as well as a variety of school activities.

The right volunteer will be well organised, have good IT skills and a commitment to children and their futures.

Governors hold office for a four year term and are expected to carry out site visits as well as to attend regular meetings which are held in the evenings and take place three times each term.

> Friendly and supportive volunteers are needed to help visually impaired people attend club sessions in Hemel Hempstead.

The Wednesday afternoon blind club offers members a delicious tea and the chance to socialise, play quizzes and games or enjoy an informative talk.

The club meets on alternate weeks at the social centre in Alston Road, Boxmoor.

Minibus escorts are needed to offer a supportive arm to members from home to the club then back again.

Hours are from noon until 5pm.
