Homeless people in Dacorum won’t be going hungry this Christmas thanks to a donation from the London Belmont Lions Club.

Dacorum Emergency Night Shelter has received a donation of food worth £150 and £224 which paid for Christmas parcels of hats, scarves and gloves for more than 50 shelter users.

Chief executive Andrew Liversidge said:”It is absolutely brilliant to have people who support us every year. It helps us to survive and means we can make Christmas a special time for people who don’t have anyone else.

Homeless folk have often lost touch with their families and don’t have any financial support.”

London Belmont Lions Club has supported DENS for the last four years on the suggestion of this year’s club president Surriya Rahman, who lives in Hemel Hempstead.

She said: “When we first arrived in the country from Pakistan in 1966 we didn’t have any where to live. A friend put us up for the night and then someone let us stay rent free in their attic for a few nights.

“I still remember those four nights when people helped us out and so I wanted to support DENS.”
