Warning about flipping fire peril

FIRE chiefs have issued a warning about the dangers of fat fires as people prepare to start flipping for Pancake Day next Tuesday.

Figures show 50 per cent of accidental fires start in the kitchen and cooks are warned not to leave hot pans of oil unattended.

Richard Thake, cabinet chief for community safety at Herts County Council, said: “Making pancakes can be lots of fun for the whole family and they certainly can be delicious.

“However, over 50 per cent of all accidental fires in the home start in the kitchen so please take care, especially when cooking with hot oil.”

If a pan catches fire, turn off the heat if safe to do so and then get out and call 999. For fire safety advice visit www.facebook.com/firekills or contact Herts Fire and Rescue on 0300 123 4046.
