Mourners’ outcry at cherry trees chop
12-128 14/2/12 Cherry trees are ill at Woodwells Cemetery, Hemel Hempstead
MOURNERS have reacted with anger after council bosses declared a much-loved stand of cherry trees in Woodwells cemeterymust be chopped down.
A sign appeared on Monday saying the trees are diseased and need to be removed, but those with plots on the site want a second opinion.
Graham Douglas, of White Hart Drive, Hemel Hempstead, whose mother Jennifer is buried in the cemetery, said fir trees had already been felled and not replaced.
“What’s needed is an independent person to go up and assess the trees,” he said.
“They look fantastic in bloom. It sets off the ambience of that particular area of the cemetery.
“If all the trees were taken down the whole area would become barren.”
The Dacorum Borough Council sign says work to fell the trees will start on February 27.
It reads: “A large branch recently fell and following an inspection of the trees by a tree surgeon it was discovered that they are diseased and will need to be removed.”

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 07:25 PMcycs.........lets be sensible here...the trees are diseased so they have to take action...end I'm pretty sure all the deceased loved ones there would agree. some new trees would be fantastic...maybe planted in another location.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 08:27 PMIf the tree surgeon says they are diseased then chop them down! It's a no brainer. Do these "mourners" know more than the tree surgeon?

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 02:57 PMWoodwell is a lovely cemetary, I have family and friends buried there, I think if they fell any trees , they should have to replace them, not only are the cherry trees beautiful but they are also good for the environment.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 11:16 AMWoodwells looks so lovely in the spring with all the cherry trees in bloom, last year loads of trees were cut down if the cherry trees go it will look so bear. So the council must get a second opinion otherwise the cemetary with start to look like a field.
