Pitstone quarry owner is disappointed the police can’t stop bathers

‘It’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed’, are the words of warning from quarry owner Tim Clark.

The director of Pitstone Quarry was supposed to meet with Hertfordshire Police to work out a plan of action to stop people bathing in his quarry in Upper Icknield Way but the police have since said that nothing further can be done.

A spokesman told The Gazette that police can’t stop the bathers but can only warn them and there is also no issue with people parking on the grass verge near a roundabout next to the site.

Olivia Finucane said: “There is no call for police involvement. The owner has done everything he can to secure the site and warn people of the dangers.”

People have been breaking into the quarry to bathe and lie in the sun on hot days for more than five years and Mr Clark is concerned for their safety.

The heavy machinery he has there, cold deep waters and the huge pile of loose limestone that he has seen people play on all pose serious safety risks.

A person has already been airlifted to hospital from the site after getting injured.

He said: “It’s very dangerous and only a matter of time before someone gets killed and if that’s the attitude of the police, I’m disappointed.

“Maybe the council need to put barriers up to stop people parking on the grass verge.”
