If you’re looking to slim down and shape up in 2013, why not put your weight behind a fundraising drive supporting one of Dacorum’s best-loved good causes?

The Northchurch-based Hospice of St Francis is now recruiting for its 2013 Biggest Loser challenge, and seeking 20 people determined to slim down for summer and raise valuable funds at the same time.

The event was run for the first time last year and overall winner John Arthur from Hemel Hempstead shed a staggering 64.5lbs – more than 4½ stone – and, together with the rest of the participants, helped raise £30,000 for the hospice.

He said: “To be able to support a very worthy cause and raise much-needed funds was important to me.

“But to have the opportunity to work with a dedicated and talented team of people in order to improve my own health and quality of life was brilliant.

“If you embrace the changes, challenge yourself, don’t make excuses, and persevere you can succeed – and then enjoy a better quality of life.”

Those taking part in this year’s challenge will have to commit to raise a minimum of £500 for the hospice.

But in return they will get 12 weeks’ Gold membership at Sportspace and 12 personal training sessions to support their efforts, as well as group training and a personalised eating plan from Alyson Carter of Nutrition 4 Life – and that adds up to £700 worth of support!

Hospice community fundraising manager Harriet Karia said: “We had such a brilliant time last year. The group really bonded and everyone supported each other.

“We were so pleased when Sportspace and Alyson agreed to take part again this year. We rely on the generosity of local companies and the public to support us and help such as this is invaluable for staging our events. ”

The challenge kicks off from the middle of March, with weekly Wednesday evening get-togethers for the Biggest Loser band.

The closing dates for applications is Wednesday, February 27 and the chosen participants will be notified by Wednesday, March 6.
