Open Spaces Society holds first open day
Britain's oldest national conservation group has held its first ever open day.
The Open Spaces Society chose to hold the event at Aldbury Memorial Hall, near Tring.
It marked campaigner Kate Ashbrook's first 25 years as general secretary for the society.
Guests could enjoy a choice of walks during the day.
Writer and society vice-president Richard Mabey led a walk to explain the Battle of Berkhamsted Common.
He followed the 1866 route of navvies who, in the dead of night, travelled from London to dismantle Earl Brownlow's illegal fences on the common.
Meanwhile, historian and founder of the Chiltern Society Chris Hall headed up a walk to Aldbury Nowers, where in 1891 two gamekeepers were killed in a fight with poachers.
It was followed with cream teas and discussion on commons, greens, open spaces and paths.
