Ahoy there, here come the Fisherman’s Friends

You might think that Fisherman’s Friends are not to everyone’s taste – but we’re not talking about the questionable cough sweets here.

The Fisherman’s Friends who will be appearing at the Alban Arena next week after a sellout show last year are darlings of the booming folk scene.

They hail from Port Isaac and their stock in trade is a rousing and joyful set of shanties and Cornish folk songs. The authentic sound of the shanty can be heard loud and clear via the mighty, brawny chorale of The Fisherman’s Friends so be prepared to have your ears blown clean off.

They’ll be docking at the Arena next Friday, February 8 at 7.30pm and the combination of five baritones, two top tenors, two second tenors, and one bass makes for a solid sea wall of sound.

They’ll be supported by Said The Maiden, a new Herts-based vocal trio, playing traditional English folk music their way and having lots of fun.

> If you prefer to do it yourself, Aylesbury’s Limelight Theatre hosts one of its popular open mike mights on Saturday, from 8pm.

It’s billed as a fun acoustic evening of music, comedy, poetry and magic and if you are prepared to perform you get in for half price.

It’s hard to believe that the boys from Leighton Buzzard with a taste for mickey-taking musical parody toured with both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones back in the early 1960s, and racked up 14 worldwide hits with their pop parodies.
