Music lovers will be able to welcome in the new year with a concert showcasing English classical music this weekend.

The St John’s String Ensemble’s only concert of the year, at St John’s Church in Boxmoor on Saturday, includes offerings from Benjamin Britten, Henry Purcell and Gustav Holst.

Renowned organist Nicholas King will join conductor Rufus Frowde for the organ duet Martyrs by Kenneth Leighton.

The charity Music at St John’s is organising the concert to help raise awareness of music in the community and money to pay for the new organ installed last year.

Member Alan Munford said:”Since the Pavilion went, St John’s is one of the only kind of places you can hear this music and the acoustics are brilliant.”

Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, are £10 and cover one adult and one child – additional tickets for children are £5.
