Organisers of the annual Friends of Ashridge plant sale in the shadow of the landmark monument on the National Trust estate are relieved that a mighty hailstorm the night before the big event and rain at the end of the day didn’t put a dampener on their fundraising efforts.

Organiser John Cartwright said: ‘We had a great day - first count suggests a record £6,800 raised, all earmarked to support National Trust work on the Ashridge Estate keeping this wonderful stretch of countryside in good shape.

“It’s been an anxious year for organisers and growers, as the never-ending winter made getting plants ready a trial.

“But our volunteer growers did us proud – thank you to them all. Local nurseries have already started booking their places for next year!’
