AN American flew to the UK to visit the pub where her great grandfather was a regular 100 years ago.

Harry Waller was born in George Street, Berkhamsted, in 1894.

In adult life, he drank at nearby pub The Rising Sun before moving to Canada with £5 in his pocket, aged 18.

His grandson Tommy later moved to the USA, where Tommy’s daughter Elizabeth was born.

On Thursday, Elizabeth, now 21, passed his old home to visit The Rising Sun for its monthly quiz.

The New Orleans University student and relative John Waller, 68, of Cobb Road, Berkhamsted, came seventh out of nine teams taking part.

But she said: “Berkhamsted is lovely – it’s uncanny to think how if Harry had not emigrated, I would be living here.”

Miss Waller is taking part of her political science course in Prague and flew to the UK from there.
