Authorities to start discussions on church plans to close New Mill social centre

The Town Council decided to talk to Churches Together about finding alternatives to pulling down New Mill Social Centre to make way for a home for a chaplain for Tring School.

When the church’s intentions emerged last year they were met with fierce opposition from the social club users, who were going to have to find alternative accommodation for their clubs and groups.

Since then they have been campaigning to save the social centre, which has been in the close-knit community for more than 100 years and is one of the few facilities they have left.

A crowd of representatives from New Mill Social Centre and a member of Churches Together in Tring attended last night’s Tring Town Council meeting to put forward their cases.

The councillors agreed on a motion to enter into discussions with the church to see if it could keep the social centre or find an alternative.
