Back where they belong, the bells of St Mary’s

After almost six months of restoration, the six bells are back where they belong at St Mary’s.

To mark the occasion a special reception was held, mainly for those organisations, including the Box Moor Trust, and other groups that had given grants towards the project.

This was followed with the church being open for the weekend for the local community to have a once in a lifetime opportunity to have a really close look at the bells before they went back up into the tower, pictured top.

The restoration is the first major work in the last 80 years and included the retuning of the bells themselves and the replacement of much of the equipment (although the original bell frame itself was not replaced), which allows them to be rung safely.

Many people came to see the bells and their new headstocks before they went back up into the belfry and to admire the wonderful new wooden wheels – made by the bellhangers Whites of Appleton – which will go along side them in the belfry.

Hopefully it will be at least another 140 years before any other major work is needed.
