HEALTH chiefs say it will be ‘business as usual’ for most services during the planned doctors’ strike tomorrow.

The Primary Care Trust said all GP surgeries will be open. However, some routine appointments may be cancelled but patients will be told in advance if this is the case.

West Herts Hospitals Trust expect the majority of routine hospital services at Hemel Hempstead, Watford and St Albans to go ahead.

Spokesman Jean Hickman said there are ‘robust contingency plans’ in place to cope with the walk-out.

Doctors voted for industrial action for the first time since 1975 over a planned shake-up of pensions which will see them pay in more but get less.

People are advised that if they feel unwell and need non-urgent treatment to contact NHS Direct at www.nhs.uk/nhsdirect or call 0845 4647.
