A council says residents should not be put off clearing paths of the snow because they’re afraid people will get injured.

Dacorum Borough Council has issued severe weather advice to its residents as weather forecasters say we could see icy and snowy conditions persisting for the next few days.

The council says people who are walking on snow and ice have a responsibility to be careful themselves, so people shouldn’t be afraid of clearing paths and then being blamed if someone comes a cropper.

A council spokesman says: “There’s no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice on the pavement outside your home or from public spaces. Salt from salt bins can be used for salting and clearing snow from the pavement outside your property or business but should not be used for salting private driveways, footpaths, forecourts or other areas that are not part of the public highway.”

The borough says it will keep people updated on what’s happening each day until services start to run normally again.

The council’s website at www.dacorum.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=8077 also has tips on keeping areas clear of ice and snow.

> Residents can also sign up to bin collection and disruption texts by sending a text message to 60777 stating: ‘DBC WASTE and following that with your house number your postcode’ For example, DBC WASTE 80 HP4 2DR
