New year resolution to boost borough

Green themed new year's resolutions are being billed as the key to securing Dacorum's future.

In light of climate change and the credit crunch, it is hoped hundreds of people will pledge to help make the borough a better place to live in 2009.

A new year event promoting sustainability is expected to spark a wave of interest in green themes, from recycling and carbon emissions, to eating a healthy diet.

At the heart of the initiative - called Tomorrow's World, Today's Challenge - will be the installation of Pledge Trees.

Dacorum families, companies, community groups and individuals can write their new year promise on a 'leaf' and attach it to one the tree's branches.

The first, at Dacorum Borough Council's civic centre office, already has entries including one from the chief executive Daniel Zammit.

It reads: 'The Zammit family pledges to reduce its annual carbon emissions to below the national average'.

Organisers at the council are encouraging every club, organisation and workplace to create a tree from recycled materials.

They say promising to ditch the rush hour traffic and walk to work, or to buy food from local farmers, can all help make a difference.

Councillor Bert Chapman, environment portfolio holder, said: "The credit crunch and climate change are the results of people living for today without thinking about the long term consequences.

"Sustainability means making sure that what we do today doesn't ruin things for future generations."

A week of events including health walks, school workshops and public talks are planned for the week starting Monday, January 12.

The council would like to hear from any group that wants to take part.

Explaining the inspiration behind the event, Cllr Chapman said: "Living

sustainably should be a way of life, but sometimes we need to be reminded of this."
