Tring pub smartens up to take on competition
THE new owner of a former troubled pub saw enough potential in it to invest £200,000 to bring it back to life.
Michael Gearing is establishing The Bell in Tring high street as an upmarket pub restaurant that plays a role in the local community.
The pub right in the centre of the market town had become tired looking and had also fallen victim to a robbery last year and had a reputation for antisocial behaviour .
Mr Gearing and his team opened it last week following a refurbishment that has given the pub a light and airy look.
The pool tables have been replaced with dining tables, there are stylish leather sofas to relax on, the car park has been transformed into a beer garden and there is a sports bar at the back.
Food will be available in the next few weeks and there are plans to help charities.
Mr Gearing said: “It’s for the more discerning customer, without ostracizing any one. We have zero tolerance when it comes to antisocial behaviour and drugs.
“There are CCTV cameras up and signs saying smile you are on camera.”
The Bell is the last of the pubs in the town centre to be upgraded. Other business people made investments and refurbishments in The Anchor on Western Road and The Black Horse on Frogmore Street last year.
The Bells’ new manager Andy Smart, who has been in the pub game for 24 years, said that it was now ready to give the other venues in the town a run for their money.
Mr Gearing added: “What I love about Tring is there are still lovely independent traders on the high street and bringing this beautiful building back to life is an addition to the traditional feel of the town.”
