A NEW Tesco store in Northchurch will be able to sell alcohol up to 11pm despite fears about the effect of noise on neighbours.
A meeting of Dacorum Borough Council’s licensing sub committee gave the go-ahead on Tuesday even though Northchurch Parish Council objected.
A letter to the committee said: “The parish council is very concerned at the late timing on the application and are of the opinion that sales of alcohol should cease at 10pm.
“The basic reason for this is that the store is in an area flanked by housing in which old people live and there is no formal car park, hence car doors are likely to be banging very late into the night.”
Jeremy Bark, a solicitor acting for Tesco, said: “The majority of people in these locations are local residents – they will walk to the shop.”
The committee voted to allow the High Street store to sell alcohol from 6am to 11pm.
Chairman Allan Lawson said: “It seems to me if the store is open to 11pm people are as likely to slam doors if they are buying milk as they are bottles of beer.”
