A Bennetts End mobility scooter blaze thought to be started deliberately was the first of two fires tackled by crews in Hemel Hempstead overnight.

Two engines from the town’s Queensway station rushed to Gate Croft to put out flames that had engulfed the mobility aid by the time they arrived.

Herts Fire and Rescue Service wrote on Twitter that the blaze had also begun to affect a nearby property, adding: “Cause thought to be deliberate following investigation alongside police.”

Firefighters were also called to reports of a car fire that had broken out after a collision at the Two Waters junction of the A41. They had put it out with a hose by just after 2.40am.

Police say the A41 blaze began just after 2am when a car spun and hit a barrier. Nobody has been arrested for the suspected arson of the mobility scooter, which police were called to at 11pm.
