A time capsule which has lain hidden in the foundations of Hemel Hempstead’s Civic Centre will be unearthed when work begins to develop the Marlowes site.

Gazette readers Kathleen and Terry Quinlan, aged 74 and 76, of Mountfield Road sent in a copy of a photograph taken in 1963, showing the burial of the capsule by then mayor Tony Graham.

Kathleen said: “The capsule is a part of the history of the town, so we don’t want it to disappear.” Terry, who she married near the time the capsule was buried, said: “We would be very interested to know what is inside.”

Dacorum Borough Council spokesman Madeleine Taggart-Smith said: “We hope to dig the capsule up when we knock down the Civic Centre and see what life was like over 50 years ago. We then hope to bury a new one under the new site.”
