A sea-themed sand sculpture on display in Hemel Hempstead has raked in more than £350 in change from superstitious wish-makers.
Passers-by in the Marlowes Shopping Centre have been throwing in their lucky coins at the mermaid, modelled in July by artist Zara Gaze as part of the mall’s Life’s a Beach summer events.
The money will be donated to the Marlowes’ charity of the year, Sunnyside Rural Trust, and will be used to help provide work experience for its 100 trainees with learning disabilities.
Vince Williams, Centre Manager at the Marlowes said: “We would like to thank all those that donated money to charity via our beautiful mermaid sculpture this summer. Sunnyside Rural Trust is a great charity and I am sure they will put the money to good use.”
Sunnyside publicity and fundraising officer Maggie Grand said: “We are both amazed and thrilled at how much was collected from the sand sculpture. Who would have guessed there was £352.02 in coins amongst all that sand!”
