As part of his whistlestop scout camp tour, brawny Bear Grylls was guided by a Hemel Hempstead school pupil during a visit to Luton Hoo.
Sea Scout Hannah Thomas, 12, who lives in Luton but attends John F Kennedy School in Warners End, took the adventurer on a walk around the camp to meet scouts who were busy building fires, rock climbing, kayaking and sailing on the lake.
Hannah said: “Bear is really friendly and nothing like what I would expect him to be.
“It was really fun.
“I would definitely tell kids to come along and do scouting. Here we are all so close – we are not just friends, we are a family.”
While on Hannah’s guided tour Bear told the Gazette: “These guys are brilliant. It’s always a privilege to spend time with them and I always think I sum up my job in about three words which is to encourage, encourage, encourage.
“The challenge for us is to get more and more adult volunteers. There are 35.000 kids on the waiting list to join the Scouts so we need more adult volunteers to join.”
