A project to help the jobless gain the skills and confidence to get into work will also benefit young people with learning difficulties in the community.

A 12-week course run by the Prince’s Trust with funding from the YMCA has seen a group of 14 unemployed young people design and create a series of books for older pupils at Hemel Hempstead’s Collett School.

The group’s project manager Francesca Davis, 22, said: “It’s giving us motivation and encouragement and I feel proud to be helping the children learn.”

Town MP and minister for disabled people Mike Penning said: “This will help the group enhance their future, but at the same time help wonderful schools like the Collett School. It is a fantastic project with young people coming together to help others, and it fits in brilliantly with what we want to see in the community.”

To date, 82 per cent of people on the course have progressed into work or education.
