A selection of the opportunities available this week through Volunteer Centre Dacorum.
> Shopmobility needs help on Saturday afternoons. This home grown good cause is based in the Marlowes Centre, left, and provides wheelchairs for disabled people to use in the town centre.
This means that they can do their shopping, meet friends for lunch and do all the things that able bodied people take for granted.
The role involves helping out on reception and making visitors welcome. You will train others how to drive the electric vehicles safely before they take them away so will have to learn how to do it yourself. The right volunteer will have good people skills and a great sense of humour.
> Druglink needs a volunteer with a background in finance to become their new treasurer.
Druglink works to improve the lives of those affected by the misuse of drugs or alcohol.
As treasurer, you will be part of a team that makes decisions that really matter to the charity’s plans, activities and finances for the future.
The right volunteer will have an understanding of charity finance and the skills to give financial updates to the trustee team at their regular meetings. This is a key role and is likely to take between five and ten hours per week.
> Volunteers are needed by the Citizens Advice Bureau to help out on reception and behind the scenes at their offices on Hillfield Road.
Happy and friendly volunteers with sensitivity and respect for clients are a must, as you’ll need good IT skills and a willingness to get stuck in and help support the team of advisors.
And volunteers with good listening and people skills are needed to become advisers and assessors. You would be dealing with clients both on the telephone and face to face and advising on a range of issues including benefits, housing and employment. Full training and support is available to the right volunteer who should be able to offer at least eight hours per week
A strong sense of justice and an understanding of the challenges faced by CAB clients are key to becoming a social policy campaigner for CAB. If you have good research and communication skills and can offer at least six hours per week for a minimum of six months, this could be for you.
