A COMMUNITY Covenant is being set up to support the county’s armed forces veterans.

There are thought to be around 80,000 veterans in Herts – 50,000 over the age of 65 – and the covenant is a way of bringing together support from a range of agencies and businesses.

A website could be developed to offer help for ‘Herts Heroes’ in areas including housing, work, health services and leisure.

A meeting of Dacorum Borough Council’s cabinet last week agreed to support the covenant, being spearheaded by Herts County Council.

Finance and resources chief Councillor Nick Tiley, referring to the borough’s links with RAF Halton, said: “The RAF Halton band coming through the town was a very pleasant event. The reception they received from people in Marlowes, spontaneously breaking into applause, was absolutely lovely.”

Next Tuesday council leader Andrew Williams, armed forces members and the Royal British Legion will sign up to the covenant.
