Hemel Hempstead man arrested after fleeing up a tree in the Water Gardens

A 21-year-old from Hemel Hempstead attempted to escape from the police by scrambling up a tree in Water Gardens on Saturday.

The man fled from Primark in the town centre at about 1.15pm after being suspected of shoplifting – but speedy police officers were hot on his heels.

The suspect then made his way to the Water Gardens where he took refuge in a nearby tree.

After a lengthy hang-out in the foliage, he was eventually coaxed down by police and firefighters, who used a raised platform to get to his lofty height.

The man was arrested at 4.15pm and taken to Hemel Hempstead Police Station.
