Decision due to be made tonight on works plan for Tring’s New Mill

Council officers have recommended that permission is granted for a plan to demolish the former New Mill Social Centre in Tring and build six new houses in its place.

Dacorum Borough Councillors will decide in a meeting at 7pm tonight in Hemel Hempstead Civic Centre whether planning permission for the work should be granted.

The plans have sparked controversy, as the centre had been used by community groups before it was closed a year ago.

The social hall was registered as a community asset earlier this year – making it more difficult for the development plans to go ahead.

But a report to councillors says this cannot apply, as legal plans for the site were made before new laws about the protection of community assets came into force.

Tring councillor Nick Hollinghurst has promised to speak ‘very forcefully’ against the plans at tonight’s meeting, he said.
