A distraction burglary in Berkhamsted has prompted the police to warn residents about a deceitful duo on the prowl.

On Tuesday two men carried out the theft in Ashlyns Road at around 2.30pm after they called at a house and pretended there was a water leak at one end of the road.

The first offender, described as being a white man in his 30s, of slim build, with short dark brown hair and wearing a black pullover, entered the house and turned on all the taps to distract the owner.

He then took money from a wallet and handbag before leaving the house and was picked up in a silver or grey car by a fairly elderly man wearing a cap.

The pair then drove off towards Kings Road.

Police are advising people to be vigilant and to call 999 if they see anyone matching the pair’s description approaching a house, especially that of an elderly neighbour.

Anyone who might information regarding yesterday’s burglary can contact the police on non-emergency number 101
