The number of French bulldogs registered in Hemel has increased eight-fold over the last five years - and experts reckon that celebrity pet choices are influenced by celebrities.
New figures from the Kennel Club show a 760 per cent increase, the biggest rise of any breed.
Other breeds to have shown a sharp increase in ownership since 2010 are bulldogs (75 per cent increase), miniature schnauzers (55 per cent increase), pugs (49 per cent increase) and Tibetan terriers (46 per cent increase).
But the most popular breed overall over the last ten years are labrador retrievers.
Next on the list are cocker spaniels, English springer spaniels and golden retrievers.
Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko said: “We are not only seeing celebrity dog ownership influence Hemel’s choice of dog, but are now seeing dogs who are celebrities in their own right, leading to a huge increase in dog breed popularity in the UK.
“This can result in people making the wrong choice when it comes to dog ownership, choosing a dog that is not right for their lifestyle simply because it is cute or popular on social media. It is important to remember that every breed is different and one of the reasons dogs end up in rescue is because people make rash choices without doing the proper research and then realise that they can not care for the dog properly.
“People can meet some of the UK’s most popular Instagram dogs at our Eukanuba Discover Dogs event in London and find out more about what these breeds are like to live with and who they would be suitable for.”
Celebrities who own French bulldogs include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Hugh Jackman, Leonardo DiCaprio and David Beckham.
