TORRENTIAL rain did little to dampen spirits as pupils flocked to schools to pick up their GCSE grades.

Students at Cavendish School crammed in to find out their results after months of hard work and many were relived to find they had done better than expected.

Sophie Swales, 16, said: “I’m really happy. I was predicted good results but I was still surprised and I did better than I expected to.”

In nearby JFK School pupils collected results while proud headteacher Bernadette Jenkins wandered round,

Student Josh Ryan said: “I’m really relieved. I expected bad results but I’ve done much better than I thought.”
