An increasing sense of competition between shopkeepers has raised standards in the annual Bovingdon hanging basket contest.

This year’s event saw 44 entries vying for the coveted title. The village’s Horticultural Society provides High Street shops with the baskets, funded by the parish council and contributions from shops and society members.

Chairman Ron Smith said: “There is an increasing rivalry to nurture the best basket, which is raising the standard and making it harder for Vic Coe of the Middlesex Guild of Horticultural Judges to select the winners.”

The Hospice Shop for St Francis were crowned winners, beating F J Parish Electrical Store, and in third place were Pendley Estate Agents.
