Internet users have voiced their concern at the decline of Tring’s weekly Friday charter market on the town’s Facebook page.

Commenters on the Everything Tring group have called for the market to be moved from its current location on Brook Street to its former site in the Old Forge car park on the High Street.

One user said: “I remember the old market in the car park. I miss that one, so much bigger and a lot more people that today.”

Another said: “A lot of the older generation cannot get there which hasn’t helped the trade either. It think it should be moved back.”

The Rev Huw Bellis, team rector at St Peter and St Pauls, said: “Tring won’t be a market town without a market. We’ll support anything if it means the market will be revived.

Leader of Tring Town Council John Allan said it is a very difficult situation.

“At present, the market contract is held by the traders who are there on a Friday.

“I believe that the best way forward is for the traders to ask to relinquish the contract, and hand the control of the market over to us. We will then be able to act in the best interests of the Friday market and its customers, and move forwards.”
