FIRE chiefs have issued a safety warning to householders over the dangers of festive fires.
Jack Daw from Herts Fire and Rescue said: “For the vast majority of people the festive season will be a time to enjoy and celebrate with families.
“But the chances of having a fire in the home double at this time of year.”
You can reduce the risk by taking a few simple steps:
l Check all your Christmas tree lights carry the British Safety Standard kite mark
l Never place candles near your Christmas tree or materials that can catch alight
l Decorations can burn easily – so don’t attach them to lights or heaters
l Never overload electrical sockets. Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before you go to bed
l Take care around open fireplaces as clothes may catch fire
l Check on elderly relatives and neighbours as they are at greater risk of fire.
