REFURBISHMENT works at a memorial garden for war heroes could bag the site a Green Flag Award.

Council chiefs will consider applying for the status, reserved for only the country’s best green spaces, once overhaul works at Tring’s Memorial Gardens are complete.

Dacorum Borough Council is splashing out £39,000 on the gardens off High Street.

Workmen began the transformation at the start of last week and it is expected to take four weeks in total.

Mayor of the town John Allan said: “The gardens have been neglected for many years with minimum maintenance just to keep them tidy.

“The new scheme will bring enormous improvement.”

There are only two other Green Flag accredited sites in the borough - Canal Fields in Berkhamsted and Chipperfield Common.
