A campus development programme approved by Dacorum Borough Council will see boys admitted at nursery level to an all-girls school for the first time.

Abbot’s Hill School’s proposals to provide new first class facilities for its nursery and prep school include the relocation and expansion of the nursery, with the creation of an all-year round nursery for up to 60 girls and boys, aged from nine months to four years old.

According to the school – in Bunkers Lane – the new nursery will provide an excellent pre-school education which will feed seamlessly into the prep school and will reflect the ethos of the school.

The new, open building will be arranged into dedicated areas, each customised to different ages and needs, withdirect access to external play areas, including a covered play area.

Work is expected to begin during the Easter holidays and is due for completion by the end of this year.

Longer term developments set for the independent school include extending the junior department, to replace the temporary accommodation used in response to the growth of the school, and the creation of a new purpose-built infant block.

Chairman of the board of governors Janet Mark said: “We are delighted that Dacorum Borough Council has granted planning permission for our proposals for the development of the school campus.

“This is a key milestone in the implementation of a long term strategy for the future development and success of Abbot’s Hill School.”

After nursery level, the school will continue to admit girls only.

Abbot’s Hill’s development scheme follows plans by Hemel Hempstead’s Lockers Park School for boys to open a pre-preparatory unit later this year which will cater for both boys and girls aged from four to six. {http://www.hemeltoday.co.uk/news/more-news/school-for-boys-announces-plans-for-pre-preparatory-unit-that-will-cater-for-both-sexes-1-6556926 |Click here for more.}
