A PRIMARY head teacher is to step down and take early retirement following a disappointing Ofsted report that put the school on notice to improve.

John Grubb announced his intention to retire from Grove Road Primary School in Tring at a meeting on Monday to discuss an action plan to turn the school around after it had been rated inadequate.

It was a mutual agreement between Hertfordshire County Council, Mr Grubb and the school that he should leave as a result of the report.

It highlighted that significant improvement was needed in relation to the leadership and management of the school and noted that there was no clear strategy to better it.

As well as this inspectors pointed out that the time that Mr Grubb spent away from the school had resulted in a lack of clarity and direction.

Chair of govenors John Manning said: “Mr Grubb accepted full responsibility and by mutual agreement decided to take early retirement.”

It is not known precisely when Mr Grubb will leave but consultant head teacher Janet Langdon will fill the post on December 1.
