Hemel driver in horror crash at Le Mans

HEMEL Hempstead racing driver Anthony Davidson suffered a horrifying accident while competing in the 80th running of the Le Mans endurance race yesterday.

Davidson, 33, had put his Toyota TS 030 Hybrid third on the grid after posting the highest top speed of 335.2 kph.

However, after only five hours of the race, his Number 8 Toyota clipped the rear of the Number 81 Ferrari as they reached the bottom of the Mulsanne straight.

The Toyota flew into the air, before landing back on its wheels and ploughing into the tyre wall. The Ferrari also ended up in the tyre wall on its roof.

Luckily, both drivers walked away from the carnage – but later in hospital it was discovered that Davidson had fractured two vertebrae and will be out of racing for a few months.

On his Twitter page he said from his hospital bed: “Well that was a big one! Lying in a French hospital with a broken back wasn’t what I had in mind at this stage of the Race.”

The Audi R18 e-tron Quattro of Fassler, Lotterer and Treloyer went on to win the classic event.
