A war veteran discovered an abandoned mountain bike in the car park of his sheltered housing complex in Hemel Hempstead.

Tom Payne, of Chapel Street in the Old Town, found the blue and black cycle laying on the ground in the corner of a car park next to his Renault Modus.

The former Second World War bomber pilot said: “It was on the floor next to my driver’s side door. I would never have seen it in the dark and could have easily tripped over it.

“It was in the darkest corner, so one can assume it had been stolen because the person who left it there didn’t want anyone to find it.”

Tom – who is in his eighties – called the non-emergency 101 police line to report it, but was told it couldn’t be collected as it wasn’t logged as stolen on the system.

But it was later collected after police realised Tom was living in sheltered accommodation, which made it difficult to store the bike.

If you think the mystery bike could be yours, call the police on 101 and quote 275 of November 12.
