Helping Haiti

College students handed over hundreds of pounds to a charity founder working with children in earthquake-hit Haiti.

Teenagers at the Hemel Hempstead campus of West Herts College met with Doctor Bob Parson from Hope for Children.

He shared his experiences of a recent visit to the Caribbean island, where the charity is providing aid. "Around a quarter of a million people lost their lives in the earthquake, which lasted as little as one minute. It is difficult to comprehend that kind of devastation can happen as quickly as that," he told the group.

Students and staff raised 775 for the cause through several fundraising activities, including a quiz night and raffle.

Dr Parsons, 76, told them: "Since the quake hit in January we've been helping where we can, taking supplies of medicines and surgical equipment out there in the immediate aftermath and we are now focusing on trying to get children who need care placed into foster homes rather than put into institutions which often have poor conditions."

The charity, based in Queensway, Hemel Hempstead, gives 100 per cent of public donations to the causes they were pledged for and is still working in Sri Lanka following the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004.

College learning centre co-ordinator Ellen Robson said: "The students and staff have all been fantastic and we'll be continuing to fundraise for Haiti and send it on to Bob as it comes in. It's wonderful to be able to pass the money on directly to a local charity and to hear first-hand how it will help."
