Bedmond Village Primary and Nursery School headteacher Emma Woollon said: “We had lots of positive comments from members of the community about having something that is a focal point for the village.

“We are trying to create opportunities for villagers to get together.”

During the fair the school choir performed, there was a dog show, musical entertainment and performances by St Albans Morris Men.

The day, held at the sports and social club playing fields in Toms Lane, is expected to have raised around £1,700, which will go towards creating a new room at the school in Meadow Way.

This will create extra classroom space as well as an area for cooking lessons - currently taught in the staff room, a family meeting area and a crèche.

The project will cost around £32,000 and Mrs Woollon said: “We have been fundraising furiously over the last couple of years so the end is in site.”

The taskforce is hosting a Make Bedmond Beautiful get together – where volunteers turn out to spruce up the village – in September.
