HEALTH chiefs are prompting people to discuss their ‘end of life wishes’ during an awareness week.

Dying Matters week, which began on Monday, aims to encourage people to talk about dying, death and bereavement.

Around one per cent of the population die each year but 80 per cent of deaths are not sudden or unexpected.

Gordon Pownall, commissioning lead for end of life and palliative care at NHS Herts, said: “Death is the one certainty for all of us, yet few of us actively discuss or plan for it. By sharing wishes we can try to ensure that wherever possible each person has a death that is dignified.”

NHS Herts is working with hospices, nursing homes and GPs on a range of projects.
