John Buchan’s epic spy thriller The 39 Steps is coming to Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre next week – but this time it’s played strictly for laughs.

We’re all used to seeing the valiant Richard Hannay battling against the odds to save Blighty from the Hun just before the First World War but this tongue-in-cheek adaptation takes the story in a whole new direction.

The production is currently celebrating its sixth year in the West End but the touring show arrives in Aylesbury on Monday for a week-long run.

A cast of four – Richard Ede plays the dashing Hannay alongside Charlotte Peters, Gary Mackay and Tony Bell – play 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun.

The 39 Steps has played to full houses all over the world and it seems that the very visual humour is a big hit in any language.

The production has also run on Broadway, toured North America and won a clutch of awards.
