Some of the stars of Dacorum’s Olympic year will enjoy a snowy celebration after receiving free tickets to Hemel Hempstead’s Snow Centre as a thank you for their efforts during 2012.

Games Makers and local volunteers made heads turn in their distinctive purple and poppy uniforms – but quickly realised that those uniforms weren’t designed for winter sports!

The 40 tickets were sponsored by the Snow Centre and the Dacorum Festival of Culture and Sport so that volunteers could enjoy a free session on the slopes.

Lucky recipients were either Games Makers, or volunteers nominated by organisers of local events supported by the Festival.

Volunteer Centre Dacorum manager Heather Allen said: “Volunteering played such a huge part in the success of 2012 and it was great to be able to recognise this.

“We need to keep the spirit of volunteering going long after the Games”

Among those receiving the Snow Centre tickets were TringRugby stalwart Amanda Mustill, Isabelle Lecoeuche and colleagues from the Hemel Hempstead Photographic Society who captured Festival of Culture and Sport events for posterity and Mary Trice and Andy Fricker, nominated by Dacorum Mencap for their help in delivering the Dacorum Mencap and Sportspace Games.

Mencap’s Liz King said: “Mary is a fantastic volunteer. She really knows how to talk to people and get them involved.

“She is amazing with our service users who all love her.

“Andy supports us in most of our activities and his help in the Mencap games was amazing.

“He is always happy to join in and help anyone. He deserves something for the amount of hours he has volunteered for us!”

Alison Adams from Sportspace nominated Angela Such for a ticket.

“Angela had an amazing input into the success of our Across Hemel event” said Alison.

Apsley Paper Trail, Dacorum Sports Trust and Bovingdon and Flaunden Tennis Club also nominated their volunteers for the Snow Centre tickets.

Brian Doran, who chaired the Festival of Culture and Sport said “Without the thousands of volunteers who supported the events in 2012 we just wouldn’t have had such a great year in Dacorum – a big thank you from me”.
