A grandmother who fell over and had to wait an hour-and-a-half for an ambulance has thanked the townspeople who came to her aid in that time.
Margaret Welbourn, 67, had come to Berkhamsted from Rugby to visit her granddaughter Poppy, aged 10 months, on Friday.
Poppy’s mum Emma had just done a Buggy Blitz postnatal exercise class near Canal Fields and the trio were crossing the bridge over the Grand Union Canal to Waitrose.
It was pouring with rain, but after slipping over Margaret could not get back up.
Luckily, a fisherman covered Margaret with his coat and a lady called Chris pushed Poppy around the nearby skate park until she fell asleep in her pram.
Another lady gave Margaret an umbrella, fetched a blanket from her car and wrapped it around her. Waitrose sent a team of first-aiders to help her.
Margaret said: “You were all wonderful and your help was much appreciated.”
Margaret was bruised by the fall, but not badly injured.
