World-famous culinary maestro Jean-Christophe Novelli paid a surprise festive visit to the Hospice of St Francis to see the fruits of a new initiative in action.

Novice chefs – participants of the Northchurch charity’s recently launched Cooking with Chris courses – came together to prepare a traditional Christmas dinner with a twist for more than 50 hospice staff and volunteers. The courses, led by hospice catering manager Chris Took, are for bereaved relatives in need of skills or motivation to cook after a loved one has died.

Watching them in action, the French-born king of cuisine, who was joined by his fiancé Michelle Kennedy, said: “This is incredible. It’s a privilege to witness their pride and confidence. Some restaurants don’t serve food as good as this.

“The ingredients are so fresh, the colour of the veg is amazing, the smell and taste is wonderful and there’s no mess.”
