Look who’s pitching up as concert’s host

STAR of The King’s Speech, Gosford Park and most recently Upstairs, Downstairs, actor Adrian Scarborough – pictured – will host this year’s Pitch Perfect fundraiser at Berkhamsted Cricket Club.

The evening of light opera and jazz, which went down a storm when staged for the first time last year, will raise vital funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital children’s charity and Berkhamsted Cricket Club.

Entertaining the crowds for the second year running will be soprano Kathryn Jenkin, fresh from her turn at Berkhamsted’s Jubilee celebrations, along with her husband, Royal Opera House tenor Phillip Brown.

Phillip will be joined by two other tenors from Covent Garden and, says Kathryn, “the three will create that kind of fun battle of showmanship that tenors can do so well when they get together in front of an audience – who can come up with the highest note, who can woo the soprano with the most beautiful melody, that kind of thing.”

On the programme are La Donna E Mobile from Rigoletto, O Sole Mio, Nessun Dorma – all famous as showcases for tenors and pieces people will easily recognise.

Also on the bill is a number called You Are My Heart’s Delight, which Kathryn is particularly looking forward to as she says “the boys are going to serenade me”.

Dreamier and more summery songs will be included, too. Look forward to favourites like Fish Gotta Swim and Summertime.

And Kathryn and Phillip’s eldest son, nine-year-old Cambridge chorister Oliver Brown, will join his mother in a rendition of Pia Jesu.

She says: “He’s got a really sweet singing voice – a very true boy treble sound.”

The al fresco concert also features Pete Kershaw’s jazz band and some musical theatre numbers from students at the Espinosa Chute Centre on the Northbridge Road.

Pitch Perfect will be held at Berkhamsted Cricket Club, Castle Hill, HP4 1HE on Sunday, June 24 – doors open at 3.30pm and the show starts at 5pm.

Tickets can be bought from event sponsors Ciente on 01442 877273, or from Travel Time World in Berkhamsted (01442 879787), the King’s Arms (01442 866595) and the cricket club (01442 862014).
