Man tries pole dancing

When Kevin Mills, from Hemel Hempstead, told his wife that he thought pole dancing was easy, she proved her point by buying him an hour's session with Polesportz, based in Binghams Park Farm.

The club, which has been running for more than two years offers monthly taster sessions for people who would like to try before they buy a six week course. The next one is on Saturday, May 30 at 6pm.

Kevin's wife bought him a voucher for a private lesson. If he had joined the group he would have been the only male there.

Polesportz director Penny Fellows said: "Kevin's wife bought it for him as a joke present for his 40th birthday because he used to fling himself around poles and say it was easy.

"I didn't think he would turn up so I was quite shocked when he did. He obviously really enjoyed his session."

Coach Nina Manning took him through a series of beginners moves, including the carousel, the fireman, front and back hook and the cradle.

Kevin said: "I had to concentrate very hard and I found it exhausting. I used muscles that I never even knew I had.

"I realise now that pole dancing is a great fitness idea, it was brilliant, and to think i did it for a laugh. I think I would do it again and, having tried it, I don't think it is just for women, it's a great muscle toning and building exercise."

The old stigma of pole dancing has long since disappeared since classes took off across Britain and America five years ago.

Polesportz classes in Hemel Hempstead are always fully booked and there are many other companies running classes in the area including Sportspace, in Hemel Hempstead.

The next step in its popularity would be to attract more men and if Kevin Mills' experience is anything to go by that could be in the near future.
