Hemel Hempstead gymnast Max Whitlock finished in seventh place in last night’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.

Whitlock received 17,219 votes for the award, which put him ahead of Welsh Galactico footballer Gareth Bale.

The award, voted for on the night by viewers, was won by fellow Hertfordshire sportsman Lewis Hamilton, who won the Formula One world drivers title last month, for the second time in his career.

The ceremony was held at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow, the venue where Whitlock won three golds, two silvers and a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in the summer.

Whitlock, 21, from Adeyfield, also won medals at the World, European and British Championships this year.

Whitlock, dressed in a dark suit, was interviewed live by Gabby Logan during the programme, and said it was ‘weird’ walking out into the arena.
