A Berkhamsted teenager climbed to the top of Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro to raise £80,000 for charity The Children’s Society.

Former Ashlyns School pupil Jessica Phillips, 19, who now goes to Bath University, took on the challenge with 31 other students.

Jess, of Meadway, Berkhamsted, said: “What none of us had realised is what a traumatic experience it is to climb this mountain!”

The students took nine hours to climb Kilimanjaro after starting at midnight to watch the sunrise, but battled arctic cold and a lack of oxygen during their journey.
